Mozawala arrest was delayed because of birthday: Police | The Indian Express

Related. Mazgaon-based visa agent Javed Mozawala was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the sessions court on Monday under the Official Secrets Act for spying and attempting to leak sensitive information to two Pakistan diplomats in New Delhi. Mumbai Police Crime Branch officers claimed he would have been arrested two days earlier with incriminating documents on his person, had he suddenly not changed his plans last minute in order to celebrate his birthday with family. Our initial tip-off was that Mozawala was on his way to New Delhi on December 6,2010,with a briefcase containing the documents. We rushed to the airport and waited for him till the early hours of the next morning. When Mozawala did not show up,we made some inquiries and learnt that he had,at the last minute, decided to spend his birthday on December 10 with his family and then leave for New Delhi, said assistant inspector Ajay Sawant,Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU),who, incidentally shares his birthday with Mozawala. Another officer part of the investigating team said they discussed whether to wait for another chance to nab Mozawala red-handed or move in right away. After several hours, the team decided to raid Mozawalas residence before buzz of the operation leaked. The move yielded results as the documents were found in his Mazgaon house. The arrest was followed by nearly 100 Right To Information (RTI) applications by Mozawalas family about procedural and technical details, which police term as attempts to draw attention away from the main issue – Mozawalas crime – to procedural lacunae on the polices part. Each RTI application only strengthened our resolve, said Sawant. An officer said that ultimately,Mozawalas entire family was called to the CIU office. Police then,in their presence, asked Mozawala about his crime. After a long time,Mozawala only said,Galti ho gayi sahab (I made a mistake, sir).
